Both automatic and manual transmissions play an important part in getting power from the engine to the pavement. The transmission is essentially a set of gears that uses torque to power a vehicle in an efficient manner. By using gears, a transmission can multiply an engine's RPM (revolutions per minute). As with all moving components in your vehicle, this creates friction which creates heat. To dissipate this heat, transmissions need lubricant. Like engine oil, transmission fluid does not have an infinite lifespan. Please refer to your manufacturer's recommendations on service intervals for your transmission. |
