A differential transfers power from the engine and transmission to each wheel. The primary function and reason for the differential's existence is to allow each wheel to travel at different velocities. This is extremely important in allowing a vehicle to make smooth turns because one tire travels a greater distance than the other during turns. The actual differential is contained in the ring and pinion housing, also known as a carrier. This is located between the two wheels. The differential housing is filled with gear lubricant to reduce gear friction and prevents the gears from building up too much heat.
